BLACKSBURG, Va. – Carolina Volleyball (14-2, 6-1 ACC) defeated Virginia Tech (7-10, 1-6 ACC) in three sets (28-26, 25-23) on Friday at Cassell Coliseum. , 25-21).
The Tar Heels struggled in the first set, falling behind by six points early, but that changed when Carolina went on a 6-0 run to take a 21-20 lead. Virginia Tech stayed with UNC and put up a tough fight with four match points at the end of the first set, but the Tar Heels went on a 3-0 run to take the first set. The Tar Heels outscored the Hookies in the first set with a batting average of .343 to .250, behind Emani Foster, Jackie Taylor, Marbrey Schaffmaster and Alexis Engelbrecht, who batted over .400 in the first set. The second set was also a fierce back-and-forth affair, with 10 ties and six lead changes, leading to a comeback from a 17-21 point deficit. Three aces from Zoe Behrendt and back-to-back kills from Chelsea Thorpe gave the Tar Heels a 25-23 set victory.
Down 17-13 in the third set, Carolina again came back with a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. Carolina scored one last point, this time for a 4-0 victory over Virginia Tech.
