President Donald Trump said tariffs will likely be “more tolerant of mutuality” as the April 2nd tariff deadline will be enforced.
“I’m probably going to be mutually generous because if I’m going backwards, it’s very difficult for people,” Trump said in an interview with Newsmax on Tuesday.
“I know there are a few exceptions. It’s an ongoing discussion, but not so many, not so many,” Trump added.
The comments are because investors worry that a more serious approach signalled by the Trump administration will attenuate consumer and business sentiment sufficiently to slow the US economy. On Tuesday, the conference committee said measures against consumer expectations regarding business, income and labor have fallen to a 12-year low.
Stocks have been struggling recently, with the S&P 500 down 3% over the past month. The benchmark immersed in the correctional area amid tariff pressure, trading more than 10% below the record set in February.
