Summary: Day 1 deep seeks are slow due to some limitations in Nvidia devices. We made it 100x faster by removing constraints and tuning the Deepseek model. What isn’t mentioned is that Deepseek 4 is designed to work on Huwaie devices with a different geometry (larger gaps between transistors and shorter conduction paths). My feeling is that once the Chinese get smaller geometries (using ASML machines) they’ll eat ChatGPT’s lunch for a much cheaper price.
As a side note, ChatGPT now stops and asks for payment before giving a final answer. “And the answer is…I’ll give it to you if you pay me.” Deepseek has improved (I used both today to solve an engineering problem) and not only does it give you the answer, but it also provides a link to the source so you can follow up on your own. ChatGPT is becoming like the US weapons industry, being very flashy and promising a lot to justify its very high cost, but delivering mediocre performance when put into use.
The collapse of this AI bubble will be spectacular.
