Georgia Tech vs. No. 12 Notre Dame Fighting Irish today was a tough game. The offense was inconsistent, and the special teams were a disaster and error-filled. The Fighting Irish controlled the game and won 31-13. Following the game, Yellow Jackets head coach Brent Key spoke to the media:
Opening statement…
“Credit to Notre Dame, we had a plan to win today. But speaking for ourselves, what we did was we just didn’t play well enough to win. If we’re playing like that, we don’t deserve to win. We may or may not have done what we did today. We’ll have a chance to watch the film tonight and see if we’re right. And we’re going to hold off on a lot of judgment until we have a chance to go back. We’ll have a chance to watch the film tonight and see if everything we saw was correct. But in the game, we did it right before the first half. We missed two field goals in the second half, and when we got down to the middle eight of the game, it wasn’t just the points, it was the momentum. But we had a lot of missed tackles in the first half, you didn’t come, you made the plays we needed to, we had too many extra yards, we had too many extra yards, and we got challenged. But I thought they did a little bit better in the second half, because winning is not enough, so I give credit to those guys, but we have a lot of work to do. We’ve got work to do, we’ve got to work on this, we’ve got to be critical, you know, special teams, we’ve known that for three weeks now, we didn’t live up to expectations, you know. I play the way I think I should play and I know I should play. And in every football game, the line of scrimmage is determined. Whether you throw the ball 60 times and run it 10 times, okay, throw the ball 10 times or run it… it doesn’t matter. You’re playing positive, otherwise you’re playing the game. There’s a lot of pressure on when to throw and when to pitch a game, and we just couldn’t do that today, so we didn’t do that. Credit to Notre Dame, we still have a lot of season left and we’ll do it. There are things to do and we have to make these things right and we have to be able to move forward and I said that very specifically, don’t move on, move on. Moving on means don’t worry about it and forget about it, okay, it’s not, okay, we have to move on. ”
1. If you lack concentration…
“Yeah, that’s the best part about this game. I think we had a very focused week of practice. I think we were very focused before the game and in preparation for the game. I thought everyone worked hard.” On weekdays We’ll give you the details, and then on weekdays, we’ll go out to the arena, and when we enter the arena, the lights will come on. So when you play on a good soccer team, you have to be able to execute and make plays. ”
2. Thoughts on Zach Pyron’s performance…
“Yeah, it was good defense. But he had guts. I mean, this kid is tough. He’s nails. Tough as nails. He went in there and gave it his all. And I We are now able to step up around him and compliment him and help him. ”
3. If you have any updates on linebackers and the health of Kyle Efford…
“Yeah, we don’t have any updates on anybody. I haven’t talked to the trainers yet. With those players, I mean, we played at Taj and EJ played in his place today, you.” Tape Let’s take a look at and really see how they did it, what they needed to improve on, and what they needed to improve on. It was too much for them, they both played football and played a lot of snaps and he got hurt early so they put him back in there but last week was the first game back. I think so. We’re going to assess and see what their situation is. ”
4. Regarding special teams miscues and long snaps…
“Yeah, I mean, I saw the same thing that you saw. Again, we missed two field goals, and that goes for everybody and everything. I’m not going to say anything about one, individual player, you know, look at it and see why it happened and what happened. But today we made a field goal. I missed two, those were the more important times.”
5. Regarding the cause of the missed tackle…
“Yeah, yeah, really, I think it was a big big shot in the first half. That was a game where they extended a lot of drives. There was a lot of hidden yards and a very, I mean, obviously a chance to beat them. We got a couple of yards and ended up with nine, 12, 14 yards. I thought from there they started supporting harder and faster. But in the second half, once we got to the key and saw what it was, we said we need to make a transition, and at halftime I said, ‘We’re tentative, very tentative. We stood up and waited. Let’s see what they were going to do. We have to be proactive and get behind you. You have to trust the other 10 people who will help you.”
6. Regarding the lack of a run game today…
“That wasn’t there. So, like I said, I think we just weren’t able to establish a lot of scrimmage and get some positive plays. You know, to be efficient. . . . The minimum for efficiency on first down is 4 yards, 2nd down is half the distance, and 3rd down is you can get a first down, but we did it more than a few times. I don’t know if I did. ”
7. Regarding Warren Burrell’s interception and the team getting a takeaway for the third straight game…
“Yeah, I mean, it was good to see him get the pick. It was a nice momentum change early in the football game. But obviously, we want to take advantage of them, so we’re going to be consistent.” And I say, “I got a big one, so I want to take a takeaway, I want to be able to, it was a really momentum swing, the whole game.” Want to go change and be able to throw those balls that gave the opponent a little bit of fear, so you have to continue to improve in that area. ”
8. If there was an explanation as to why Notre Dame wasn’t penalized when David Shanahan went down…
“Yeah, we talk every time a situation like that happens. We communicate with each other. But I’m there again after that moment by officiating.”
9. About Haynes King…
“It’s, you know, you’re going to say like crazy every day, but it’s kind of like, you know, I don’t know, I don’t know where it is. No.’ That’s the limit… No, it’s not a season-ending injury. , you know, react and come, ready, ready to roll. ”
