History BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Duke University volleyball team defeated Virginia Tech 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-16) Sunday night at Cassell Coliseum. With this win, the Blue Devils improved to 8-11 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Graduate student Tiffany Perlman finished tonight with a team-leading four blocks, reaching 300 blocks for her career.
Offensively, the Blue Devils hit .295 percent for the game as Taylor Williams and Kelly Keefe had 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Setter Grace Penn had 27 assists and 11 goals, and libero Maylin Godshall led the team with 14 goals.
How it happened Williams led the offense from the start with four kills on nine swings, and Duke started the game hitting .289 percent. Virginia Tech had four blocks, but Duke used three aces to take the first set. The Blue Devils continued to play well and took a 2-0 lead into the second set. Williams continued to lead the team with six kills and hit .455 percent. Virginia Tech had more kills than Duke in the second set, but the Blue Devils held out and took the set. Duke finished the game with a batting average of .360, holding the Hokies to a batting average of .121. Breonna Goss, Tiffany Pohlman and Rachel Richardson all had two blocks to help the Hokies cruise to the win. Players to watch The win marked head coach Jolene Nagel’s 710th career win and 507th at the Blue Devils’ helm. Duke wins the all-time series with a score of 36 wins and 6 losses. Duke won its second away game of the season and will face Durham on the road with a record of 2 wins and 4 losses. Penn achieved his fifth double-double of the season. The game saw 21 ties and 13 lead changes. Duke’s batting average of .295 was the third-best offensive record this fall. Rachel Richardson had seven kills, four digs, two aces and two blocks. Virginia Tech was led by Haley Pierce with 12 kills. Next up, Duke returns to Cameron Indoor Stadium to host Miami (October 25) and Florida State (October 27).
