From the Internet to AI: The evolution of corporate learning
The Internet has turned corporate learning and development (L&D) into our minds, and mobile phones have slipped into our hands, but now artificial intelligence (AI) is pushing boundaries beyond imagination. Is it a revolution that fundamentally changes the way we work and learn? Or is it another technological trend: a philosopher’s stone that can turn lead into gold?
Wander this – commercial stories, breakthroughs of today, possibilities for tomorrow – mix real stories, some “What ifs” and some anecdotes from work at Commlab India.
Past: Internet and Mobile
Rewind to the late 90s. The Internet raided L&D, turning dull training halls into computer screens. LMS platforms such as Blackboard and Moodle had come out, and by 2005, about 60% of large companies had participated. [1] Other e-learning pioneers jumped in. Online modules have slashed training costs by 30%, reaching thousands around the world. It certainly was clunky, but it caused something.
Then, 2010 brought about a mobile revolution. It has been adopted in apps like LinkedIn Learning, and learning has been reduced to fit the palms and pockets. McKinsey’s study shows that completion rates had increased by 45% by 2016. [2] I knew a sales person who brushes up specs while commuting to Mumbai. It felt like liberation.
These shifts were not trivial. They set the stage. Now there’s AI. I can’t help but laugh at what’s coming. Especially at Commlab India, a mix that has been in the game since it started 24 years ago.
AI’s bold brush strokes
AI is not twisted. It’s coming like a runaway train. I think they draw the L&D canvas vigorously in a way that creates the race of the heart.
Personalization
One of the most important impacts of AI is in the personalization of learning. Traditional learning systems provided content of all sizes. AI will turn this model over into your mind. For example, Degreed’s AI watches learning patterns and fine-tunes the course.
Draw a sales team: One person gets roleplay for negotiations, while another person delves into the analysis. Everything from one system. The top LMS platform with AI has been able to analyze learner data, adjust paths, and keep training personal and adaptive. This is not theoretical. It’s already working. AI-driven personalization ensures that every learner receives what they need based on their learning goals and performance.
automation
Automation is another thrill. Tools like Synthesia and Vyond (the ones we use) cut video faster. A large healthcare company has asked them to build a compliance course in three days, in the old three-day way, three weeks or so. We cut production with AI for months to days.
Upload your policy updates now and you’ll be ready to roll out by the time you finish your coffee, complete and 20 language courses. The increased efficiency is incredible and it’s rethinking how the L&D team works.
Data-driven learning
Data is where AI can really be powerful. Edcast finds skill gaps with analysis. The logistics giant has found that 40% of drivers are behind the know-how of green technology. Gartner predicts that by 2026, 75% of companies will use this. This is an increase from 20% in 2022. [3] With its ability to measure impact, dynamically adapt training strategies, and predict skill shortages, AI is essential for workforce planning.
Scaling with speed and quality
The scale is the grand finale. AI grows. Our clients trained 10,000 staff in 37 countries with scams in a week. AI allows you to scale with quality and speed. I gave my phone within reach. AI adds depth and speed. Imagine an organization with thousands of employees in different regions. AI ensures that each employee guarantees localized and relevant training content in real time.
Win the brilliance and the wrinkles that teach you
McKinsey forecasts $600 billion in savings by 2030, when content creation alone is automated. [4] Engagement Climbing – 2024 data shows a retention rate of 25% with AI-powered learning. When the scale begins, the cost decreases. This direct, direct, generational AI thrashing timeline, we’ve seen clients rave about ROI.
But the shadow remains. The cost has become more intense. According to Gartner’s 2025 report, 40% of companies accelerate AI adoption for initial investment. [5] Resistance is also real. I met an L&D expert who vows to take over by AI. Privacy concerns are difficult. European companies were fined in 2024 when AI tools leaked learner data. The GDPR is not confusing.
Still, I’ve seen victory in a blend of AI and trainers. Analysis was induced, and adoption rose 60% over six months. Customers have improved safety training using VR drills equipped with Commlab-style rapid tools. Injuries have been reduced by 15%. What if onboarding uses AI, reduces time by 50% and scales globally?
I’m dreaming of tomorrow’s L&D
Where is this? I wake up and imagine. Tools like ChatGpt build the complete course from quizzes, simulations and multilingual script prompts. Adaptive Systems Coach Learner in real time. Gartner uses AI mentors by 2030, 60% of training. [6] Testing VR “Skill Lab” in IKEA’s Sweden. Staff handle the chaos of virtual customers, and AI fine-tunes the scenario on the fly.
I’ll stretch it even further. Completely AI-RUN L&D department? Picture Deloitte discovers leadership gaps. AI creates gaming courses, tracks them, and continuously optimizes them beyond strategies without human intervention. Or Dream Wilder: Worldwide for UNICEF Training Volunteers – AI builds cultural modules overnight, and VR simulates villages. The LMS platform could evolve there, mining data from hundreds of clients for real-time insights. Crazy? perhaps. But is it inevitable? probably.
Where to start
The internet opened the door. Mobile sets us up for free. AI gives us wings and turbocharges our brains. But that’s not easy. The cost will be bitten. Resistance is delved into – trainers need coaxial. Data is risky on looms – GDPR is a beast. This is my nudge: dream and start small. Take one course of prototype, proof, and push.
