The event will feature University of Phoenix Leader Dr. Mark Booker, Vice President for Strategy. Mary Elizabeth Smith, MD, Director of Learning Innovation Strategies, Center for Teaching and Learning; Tahnja Wilson, MBA, Director of Faculty Training and Development, Academic Affairs. Julie Cain, MD, senior instructional designer, spoke on a panel discussion focused on how generative AI can increase productivity, enhance content creation, and support existing skills. The virtual event is free and open to the public.

Experts on the webinar panel contributed to the planning and curriculum of a new foundational course, “Generative AI in Everyday Life,” offered by the University of Phoenix. This course provides learners with an understanding of generative AI technologies, including hands-on experience with AI tools. In this 5-week course, learners will develop the following skills:
Creative thinking: Create original digital content using generative AI tools and adjust prompts to improve output.
Ethical reasoning: Analyze the ethics, transparency, safety, and impact of generative AI tools and outputs.
Lifelong learning: Learn about generative AI and its potential applications in everyday life.
As vice provost for strategy at the University of Phoenix, Mr. Booker is responsible for building the critical path academically to improve the student experience, including implementing learning platforms, enhancing curriculum, and developing empathetic solutions that drive improved student outcomes through data. I am overseeing the efforts. He is the recipient of the 2024 UPCEA Operational Excellence Award and the 2024 American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officials (AACRAO) Thomas A. Birger Award. In 2023, he was part of the leadership team selected to receive the Catalyst Award for Teaching & Learning. Mr. Booker has been on the staff of the University of Phoenix since 2001 and has previously served in multiple leadership roles, including Vice President for Admissions at the University of Phoenix.
Smith is the Director of Learning Innovation Strategies for the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Phoenix, where she previously served as Research and Implementation Strategist and Director of Curriculum Development. Mr Smith recently co-authored a white paper on how digitized skills and aligned curriculum can ensure career-focused learning experiences. For more than 30 years, Mr. Smith’s career in education includes positions in curriculum development, learning design, faculty development, faculty, and e-learning at four universities, several community colleges, and two educational software companies. I’ve been engaged. She holds a bachelor’s degree in speech communication and journalism from Southern Illinois University and a Ph.D. in Educational Media and Computers from Arizona State University.
Wilson is director of faculty training and development at the University of Phoenix, where she helps drive innovation and support faculty excellence. Her professional accomplishments include redesigning in-person courses for online delivery at Arizona State University. Since joining the University of Phoenix in 2019, she has led faculty training and development efforts with research interests in artificial intelligence, games in learning, and personalized education. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Washington, a master’s degree in international management from Thunderbird, and an MBA from Arizona State University.
Cain is an innovative designer with decades of experience designing engaging curriculum and media for classroom and online learning. She joined the university in 2011 after teaching at the secondary level and pursued a path serving career-minded adults, first in student services, then as an editor, and now as a senior instructional designer. Cain holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Arizona State University and a master’s degree in education and instructional technology from Western Governors University. Her current projects include designing and implementing practical tutorials on the ethical use of generative AI tools to support learners’ academic and professional goals.
