HAMMOND, Ind. – The Michigan Technological University volleyball team completed the non-conference schedule and weekend of the 16th annual Midwest Regional Crossover Tournament with a 3-1 win over Findlay on Saturday. The Huskies lost to the Oilers 25-20, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21 this season.
“Simply put, today’s win was huge,” Tech coach Matt Jennings said. “We played tough, aggressive and to win. Like we’ve said all year long, if we score and spread the ball, we’re hard to beat. We can’t beat this Huskies team any more. I couldn’t be prouder.” ”
Both teams had 54 kills in the game, but the Huskies forced the Oilers into 25 offensive errors and overcame 31 ties and 14 lead changes to go 11-7 overall. Findlay lost 14-6.
Seven different Huskies had one kill in the first frame, and Rachel Zurek had four. Tech led 21-20, scoring the final four points on kills from Bryn Erickson, Zurek and the game-winning goal from Casey Miners.
The Oilers led by as many as seven points in the second, with three different players each recording three kills to tie the game before intermission.
The third set saw 14 ties and six lead changes, but the Huskies took control late, scoring five of the final six points to take a 2-1 lead. Meg Raabe was third with six kills, including two of the final five.
University went on a 7-0 run in the fourth inning to tie the score at 16, but the Huskies regained the lead and brought on Jacqueline Yancey and Rachel Zurek in the closing stages to seal the win. Yancey, Zurek and Meg Rabe each had five kills in the fourth.
Meg Rabe had a match-high 17 kills while hitting .319. Rachel Zurek (14) and Jacqueline Yancey (12) also scored in double digits offensively. Tess Hayes started the offense with 45 assists while adding 12 digs. Amelia Albers led the way with 18 points, and Bryn Erickson added 17 points.
Tech returns to GLIAC activities at Wayne State University and Grand Valley State University next weekend.
