1. Run game
Kyron Draughn and Beischur Tuten had big games that were all over the football world. The Drones opened the game with an 11-yard rushing touchdown on the first series and finished the first half with two rushing touchdowns, their first multiple rushing touchdown game since Pitt a season ago. Ta. Tuten had the longest run of his career with a touchdown of 83 yards at the start of the second quarter, extending his streak of at least one rushing touchdown in a game to nine. Tuten currently holds Virginia Tech’s single-game record for rushing yards.
2. Defense
Virginia Tech got a three-and-out on its first drive, followed by defensive lineman Kelvin Gilliam Jr. with a forced fumble. The defense held Boston College scoreless in the first quarter and forced a fumble to start the second. The story continued as the Hokies forced five fumbles on the night. The defense allowed three consecutive scoring drives to start the second half, but eventually regained their rhythm in the fourth quarter. Antoine Powell-Ryland had a great night with four sacks.
3. Very efficient first half
The Hokies were able to move the ball and get stops efficiently in the first half, allowing Boston College only 134 yards of total offense and gaining 332 yards of total offense. The defense forced four fumbles in the first half, but the offense attacked both on the ground and through the air, with Kyron Drones passing for 164 yards and a touchdown.
4. Struggles in the second half (especially in the third quarter)
The team started the third quarter scoreless on offense, but the defense allowed a 3-yard touchdown run to start the second half. We’ve seen this be an ongoing problem for the Hokies this season, both in the first half and second half. The team can’t put together a complete, good game in all four quarters.
5. Beishul Tuten
Beishl Tuten continues to lead the Virginia Tech Hokies team by remaining a duo threat on offense. Tuten can both catch and run, and we saw him on display tonight as he ran for 266 yards, three rushing touchdowns, and one reception with a 20-yard receiving touchdown. The more Tuten continues to show his versatility, the more his draft stock and Heisman ranking will continue to rise. Tuten also finished the game with the most rushing yards in Virginia Tech football history.
