We asked Chicago locals to share the hidden gems and unique places they think everyone should experience.
1. A Hidden Gem in the Loop District
The Loop District, the heart of Chicago, is full of unique activities. From delicious food to skyscrapers and attractions, the Loop has it all.
“When you’re in town, park your car in the garage, rent a Divvy bike, and cruise among Chicago’s most iconic attractions along the lakefront,” says the team at Chicago Real Estate Media. “When you’re ready for a break, hop aboard the Chicago Water Taxi and travel around the city through the river or take an architectural tour. It’s an incredibly fun and active way to avoid traffic and see the city’s famous architecture from every angle. Bonus: Take an evening tour to see the city in all its glory.”

Hero Coffee Bar, located at Jackson and State, is one of Chicago’s hidden gems. Would you like to explore Diagon Alley in the Windy City? “Look no further than this adorable cobblestone alley that’s not easy to find. Don’t miss the Fairy Godmother Latte with honey and lavender. The shop is housed in one of the oldest buildings in the city, an old stable that survived the Great Chicago Fire,” shares Megan of Color and Curious.
Explore the Art Institute of Chicago South Garden
The Art Institute of Chicago South Garden is truly a hidden gem. “Located on Michigan Avenue, next to America’s most iconic museum, no one knows it’s there. It’s a surprisingly peaceful oasis that transports you from the Midwest to Italy in just a few steps,” details Maura and Maura Black Photography.
2. Hidden gem in the South Ring
The South Loop is one of those areas where there’s always something nearby. With parks, museums, lakeside trails, local restaurants, and more, it’s easy to spend a day without leaving the area.
Art lovers should check out the Wabash Art Corridor.
Stretching from just north of Harrison Street to 16th Street between Michigan and State is the Wabash Arts Corridor. It includes dozens of murals hidden in buildings and alleys by various Columbia University students, visitors and local muralists. “There’s a variety of cultures, influences, and styles scattered here. If you haven’t checked it out, take a look on a sunny day on an electric scooter or bike, and end your trip with pizza at Aurelio’s in Roosevelt,” recommends Bain with Rock Chicago.
3. Hidden gems in Streeterville and the Gold Coast area
It’s easy to spend an afternoon in Streeterville or the Gold Coast without going to the places the locals actually recommend. These are some of the neighborhood favorites worth adding to your list. “At Ryan Corporate Housing, we place guests in Chicago’s most iconic neighborhoods. Even well-known areas like Streeterville, the Gold Coast, and River North have hidden layers that most visitors never discover,” says the team at Ryan Corporate Housing.
“In Streeterville, the lakeside path north of Navy Pier offers great skyline views without the crowds, and the Museum of Contemporary Art is just off Michigan Avenue, but it’s always less visited. 4. Hidden Gem in River North District
Once an industrial area, the River North neighborhood is now a popular destination for people looking to relocate. This area has everything residents need, with many shops and restaurants within walking distance.
“River North far exceeds its gallery district reputation. Hidden among the skyscrapers are independent coffee shops, chef-driven neighborhood spots, and rooftop terraces with views that remind you of exactly why people don’t want to leave Chicago,” concludes the team at Ryan Corporate Housing.

A great hidden gem in Chicago is none other than Untitled, a speakeasy lounge and music venue. “There’s something very special about being at River North. You walk through the giant doors not knowing what’s going to happen, and then you walk in and are led into a really unique and great atmosphere. Try the infamous Manhattan or Old Fashioned cocktail,” explains Tamika from Bottle Rocket Media.
5. A Hidden Gem in the Wrigleyville District
Wrigleyville is home to historic Wrigley Field, the second oldest ballpark in the country. The area is also home to many unique restaurants, bars, and other hidden gems, and is usually crowded with locals, even outside of baseball season.

When you enter the Music Box Theater on the north side, you will feel as if you have traveled back in time. Mark from Mark Toland Mind Reader says, “This hidden gem in Chicago hosts special events such as holiday song-alongs, monthly midnight screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Picture Show, and new movie screenings. Plus, we often show classic movies on actual film, making for an amazing movie-going experience.”
6. Hidden gems in the Lincoln Square area
Founded by German immigrants, Lincoln Square brings a German feel to the Windy City. The area is full of independent boutiques and specialty shops, as well as a number of restaurants and bars serving traditional German cuisine.

7. A Hidden Gem in the Portage Park District
Located on Chicago’s northwest side, Portage Park is Chicago’s largest Polish neighborhood. The area is named after the famous park and is home to the National Veterans Museum, which displays art created by veterans.
Try mouth-watering Chicago-style hot dogs at Hot Dog Box
If you’re visiting Six Corners in the Portage Park community, stop by Hot Dog Box and try some of their classic and unique hot dogs. “This new facility is run by a father and daughter team and was started as part of our business pivot during the pandemic,” says Amy from Six Corners Association. “This space is charming and family-friendly, with large board games and other tabletop activities, and is definitely a hidden gem in Chicago worth checking out.”
8. A hidden gem in the Bucktown area
There’s always something happening in the Bucktown neighborhood, one of Chicago’s trendiest neighborhoods. From great coffee shops and cafes to shops and music venues, Bucktown has so much to explore.
Spend a relaxing afternoon at Red June Cafe
“Kim, the owner of Red June Cafe, is wonderful and friendly,” says Ashley from Ray’s Bucktown B&B. The staff are knowledgeable and always welcoming. It has a wide range of high-quality coffee and food, and the outside wall has a very cute floral pattern, so you won’t want to miss it. ”
9. Hidden gems in the St. Ben area
Named after the more than 100-year-old parish in the center, St. Ben’s neighborhood is located on Chicago’s north side and is the perfect area to escape the crowds of downtown Chicago. This charming community has many independent neighborhood spots worth checking out.
Taste German cuisine at Laschet’s Inn
Amy from Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education recommends Laschett’s Inn to immerse yourself in true German culture. “If you’re looking to move to Germany, this local German family run business is the place for you. Laschet’s Inn is known for its extensive beer menu and excellent spaetzle, sauerkraut and sausages. Laschet’s Inn maintains its old-world feel and is a staple in the St. Ben’s neighborhood.”
10. A hidden gem outside the city
If you’re outside of downtown Chicago, don’t worry. There are still many hidden gems to visit, including many shops and restaurants.
Try Platia Mediterranean Kitchen
“The best Greek restaurant on the northwest side of Chicago is Platia Mediterranean Kitchen” Details from Mircea and Echo Limousine. “Make sure to try the Paidakia, it melts in your mouth. Another great option is the Feta Me Meli, a warm croissant with freshly baked imported feta cheese, honey, sesame seeds, phyllo and figs. The restaurant has a great atmosphere, with Greek music, an outdoor patio, and attentive servers.”
