Every week it seems like Virginia Tech is inching closer to an ACC Championship appearance, and that’s true.
The Hokies are currently +2800 favorites to win the ACC Championship at DraftKings Sportsbook, making it essentially a five-team battle: Miami, Clemson, SMU, Pitt, and Virginia Tech. Teams like Louisville, Syracuse and Duke aren’t mathematically eliminated, but it will take a miracle to make it to the conference title game.
But the Hokies have the job for them. Brent Pry and his staff now face Syracuse, Clemson, Duke and Virginia, all of which have shown at times that they can exceed preseason expectations. Perhaps Virginia Tech needs to go undefeated during this period and hope teams like SMU and Pitt lose in the conference until the end of the season.
So Virginia Tech’s path is simple. Clemson has the advantage against the Hokies, but it’s a must-win game. There are so many high-level teams in the ACC that it is highly unlikely that a team with two conference losses will advance to the conference championship. There’s a lot to be said about the Hokies vs. Miami game, but a loss is a loss and the team can’t leave the game to the referee’s discretion.
Virginia Tech has to win, but they have no other choice. That road begins this weekend against the Syracuse Orange. Kyle McCord had five interceptions last week, and if the Hokies’ strong pass defense can adapt to Syracuse’s pass-oriented offense, the Hokies should continue to climb up the ACC standings. The Hokies can’t wait to play Clemson either. That’s because, despite losing to Stanford earlier this year, Syracuse has ruined many of the team’s seasons.
