The presidential election could depend on Pennsylvania’s voting results.
As a result, millions of dollars in advertising reach voters through the mail, phone, television, and sites like YouTube.
Many of those ads focus on what Republicans are clearly trying to make a campaign issue: immigration.
When the issue came up in a presidential debate, the debate centered on whether or not Haitian immigrants from Springfield, Ohio. (Those who are here legally) are eating their neighbors’ dogs and cats.
“This just goes to show you should always fact-check,” Congressman Glenn Thompson told the Times Observer. “I don’t know what the truth is.”
He said Trump’s use of the story was a “missed opportunity” to focus on broader issues.
And what kind of solutions does Thompson want to see on the broader issue of immigration?
“I don’t think it takes real creative imagination to know what we need,” Thompson said, calling for a return to President Trump’s policies.
He cited President Trump’s actions that have reduced the number of people crossing the southern border.
“Congress offered no help in this matter,” he said. “The border wall worked… We know that the Remain in Mexico policy works.”
This was a policy that required pardon seekers to remain in Mexico until their sentencing, Thompson said.
“It’s been abolished,” he said.
Thompson argued that the Biden administration has sent a message “to the rest of the world, intentionally or not, that[we]have open borders.” You can enter the US by walking. We have no rules or regulations. ”
He said President Trump’s actions “really sent a message that we are a nation that follows the rule of law.” It sent a message to people: “Don’t bother coming.” We would like to welcome you to our country. There’s a right way and a wrong way. ”
“The right way to do it is very bureaucratic,” Thompson acknowledged. Citing a case his office has worked on where it took 16 years to obtain a green card, he said he believes some people die before receiving their final approval.
“All we really need is a return to many of the policies under the Trump administration,” he reiterated.
What if I already have someone?
President Trump is proposing mass deportations.
Thompson said it starts with illegal immigrants, such as those with criminal records or gang membership.
“I think for the sake of the country, it should be first in, first in,” Thompson said. Those who voluntarily register and return to their home countries demonstrate their “readiness to comply.” You have to stand in line to get back on the right path.
“Unless we do that, we’re going to see this surge at the border probably forever,” he said. “The purpose of the wall was not to block off people coming in, but to gather them at a point of entry so they could determine who you were and what your intentions were.”
He said this approach would lead to a “significant reduction” in the flow of human trafficking and drugs into the country by “bringing them to ports of entry”.
“The number of people we’ve lost in our communities to human trafficking (and deaths to fentanyl) is that we’re a border state. We’re all border states,” he said.
