NIXA, Mo. (KY3) – An aeroponic tower will soon be used to provide fresh vegetables to Nixa Public Schools students. Food will also be donated monthly to local food pantries in Christian County.
Aeroponic towers allow you to grow fresh produce vertically.
Dr Nicole McCauley is the founder of the Macquarie Foundation, an organization that supports the creation of sustainable projects such as aeroponic farms.
“Aeroponic growing grows 30% more crops three times faster using 2% less water and 10% more space,” Dr. McCauley said.
She said students will not only be able to eat produce from the tower, but they will also be able to work on the farm every day. She said the value is invaluable to the entire Nixa Public School District.
“We teach students to be producers, not just consumers,” Dr. McCauley said. “It teaches them how to give back to their community and teaches them the life skill of growing their own food.”
The total cost of the farm was approximately $380,000, paid for with the help of several donors.
The farm does everything in its power to not only feed students, but also feed those in need.
“1,000 plants are donated to Least of These each month to help serve our neighbors in this community,” she said.
Parents can also purchase the produce they grow. There’s basil, chard, and other fresh vegetables. McCauley said he plans to change what he grows each month to keep things exciting for the students working on the farm.
The ribbon cutting is scheduled to begin at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, at Nixa Middle School, located at 205 North Street in Nixa.
