TYRRELL COUNTY, N.C. — Each week, the Academic Showcase presented by the U.S. Air Force will highlight two schools and their off-campus efforts.
East Carolina school students are the first in the state to receive the new technology.
Many people are used to seeing a drone high in the sky looking at what’s below. Here at Columbia High School, the drones are still seeing what’s below, but instead they’re seeing what’s under the water. New technology that our students are getting right here at Columbia High School.
Under water is a completely different world.
It’s a new perspective for Angie Jenning’s required engineering class at Columbia High School.
This was not a school system that you would expect to have this type of program. So we really started doing this last year. We wondered if we could combine engineering essentials with gadgets that students play with. Responding to the needs of our community and our environment.
Tyrrell County Schools CTE Director Christy Christenberry and Jennings came up with the idea for underwater drones.
To my knowledge, no other high school program, at least in North Carolina, has a program like this. One of the things we’re really looking at is the structural components. Because storms occur frequently in this region, they can cause significant damage to bulkheads and bridges, and we rely on them to get around. For us, it’s great to see the effects.
A unique experience for students.
“The underwater drone was really cool. We’re building other robots as well, and we have other drones that we’re going to use. It’s really fun with the underwater drone. You can see a lot of what’s underwater.”, a lot There’s a structure to it and it really helps,” Emmanuel said.
“Drones can be used for a variety of purposes, such as looking at animals and their habitat, working on bridges and docks, and so much more that humans can’t do,” Bryson said. said.

Teaching people how to fly a drone is a lot of fun, so I’m looking forward to giving it a try.
