CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Michigan Technological University football team opened its second half of conference play with a 1-0 loss to Davenport on Friday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
“It was another tough loss for our group. It’s not for lack of effort, opportunity or talent. All we need to do is find a way to put the ball in the back of the net,” Tech said. – Soccer coach Melissa Kuhar said. “We will move forward and strive for a win on Sunday.”
Michigan Tech (4-7, 2-6 GLIAC) held a 3-2 advantage on an early corner kick and had a total of three shots, with Grace Heppner converting the Black & Gold. Davenport (5-3-4, 3-2-3 GLIAC) leading scorer Haley Dekevers had the only scoring chance of the first half less than three minutes into the game.
Defender Clara Murchison, making her second career start, made important stops for MTU in the first half with a blocked shot and a takeaway from Die Kevers.
The offense increased in the second 45 minutes of play, with Tech goaltender Bry Burrows making three saves in that period as the Panthers outscored the Huskies 9-7.
Veteran Kielsen Korinek had a great chance to shoot from deep in the sixth in the 62nd minute, but his shot went high and over the goal.
Remarkably, Davenport, a team that has only scored in the second half so far this season, found the back of the net in the 71st minute when Taylor Meadows broke through a chaotic box, found a lost ball on a failed clearance and found the back of the net. When it was shaken, it shook the net. With less than 20 minutes left in regulation, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Brooke Green hit the winning shot for the Huskies, forcing a save from Walter with 10 minutes left, and Davenport ultimately tied the season series at 1-1 with a 1-0 victory.
Brooke Green and Jordan Noble had the only two shots on goal for Michigan Tech, and junior goaltender Bry Burrows had four saves.
Haley Diekebarth paced the Panthers’ offense with a team-high four shots, two of which went on goal. Freshman goalie Elizabeth Walter made two saves and earned her fifth shutout.
