Gemini 2.0 may arrive in December ChatGPT-5, which is expected to have improved performance across the board, may also be released at the same time.
It was only a few days ago that we heard rumors that OpenAI would be announcing the next-generation ChatGPT-5 model – a rumor dismissed as “fake news” by OpenAI head Sam Altman. And now Google Gemini 2.0 in the next few months.
Similar to the ChatGPT rumor, this one comes from The Verge (via 9to5Google). Gemini’s last major upgrade occurred in February with the release of Gemini 1.5. Google uses the name Gemini for both the AI bot and the underlying model.
What this report doesn’t give is any indication of what’s new or improved in Gemini 2.0. If you look forward to previous releases, expect smarter answers, faster processing, support for longer inputs, and more reliable reasoning and coding.
According to the report, Gemini 2.0 does not offer the performance improvements that developers originally expected. But the article also notes that this is a trend that affects not just Google, but all large-scale language models (LLMs) in general.

If Google (and likely OpenAI) actually begins upgrading its AI models by the end of the year, it would be further evidence that companies are investing time and resources in artificial intelligence to stay ahead. .
In recent weeks, AI companies have announced new video tools, improved image generation, and bespoke search capabilities. Meanwhile, next week, millions of iPhone owners will be able to try out Apple Intelligence for the first time.
That said, we’re still waiting for Google to launch its next-generation Project Astra AI assistant, which it demoed at Google I/O 2024 in May. Project Astra combines multiple inputs and outputs in a more sophisticated and natural way than ever before.
We’ve actually spent some time with Project Astra before, but it doesn’t seem like it’s directly connected to Gemini 2.0. However, it is possible that you are using Gemini 2.0. Of course, we’ll bring you the news here as soon as anything is officially announced.
