Google is reportedly developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to take over web browsers.
The tech giant plans to show off the AI product, codenamed “Project Jarvis,” when it unveils its next Gemini large-scale language model as early as December, The Information reported on Saturday (October 26). reported.
OpenAI is working on developing AI models that can perform research by autonomously browsing the web with the help of computer-assisted agents (CUAs) that can take actions based on the results.
However, the report says that Google plans to take this concept further and develop software that can interact directly with users’ browsers.
PYMNTS has reached out to Google for comment, but has not yet received a response.
The news comes just days after AI company Anthropic announced a new feature called “Computer Usage” that allows the company’s AI to interact with users’ computer screens.
The tool allows Anthropic’s AI to interpret on-screen content and, with your consent, perform tasks like web browsing, button clicks, and text entry, as reported here .
“This development marks a shift in AI-assisted technology as it can handle real-time screen activity rather than relying on back-end application integration,” PYMNTS wrote.
In the demonstration, the system planned a morning hike near the Golden Gate Bridge, autonomously finding trails, checking sunrise times, and creating a calendar invitation with details about appropriate hiking attire. In this way, we demonstrated its functionality.
“This release comes amid growing industry interest in AI agents that can operate with minimal human oversight,” PYMNTS wrote. “Companies like Microsoft and Salesforce have recently introduced agent tools for workplace tasks, but Anthropic’s approach is different in that it focuses on direct screen interpretation rather than application-specific integration. .”
And, as discussed in a separate report here , Anthropic’s move puts the company in a position to help companies like Google and Microsoft automate routine computer tasks for companies looking to increase productivity and reduce costs. will be in direct competition with
While previous AI tools focused on text and image generation, these new agents are AI systems that can actively interact with software and perform complex workflows with minimal human oversight. It shows the evolution of
Dan Parsons, COO/CPO at Thoughtful AI, said: “Agentic AI will redefine industries over the next three years with its ability to operate autonomously and make decisions without human intervention. ” he told PYMNTS.
“The biggest gains will be seen in areas such as systems management, operations, customer service, and complex decision-making, where AI can significantly improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enable new levels of scalability.”
