WASHINGTON, DC, July 15 – Following reports of a third death related to ICE enforcement operations in just one week, Naina Gupta, director of policy at the American Immigration Council, issued the following statement:
“We can’t dismiss this as a series of unrelated tragedies. This is what happens when Congress spends billions of dollars on mass deportations instead of focusing on the actual failures of our immigration system.”
“The fact that ICE has reportedly stopped most vehicle stops speaks to the fact that some officials recognize that current enforcement tactics are putting people at risk. But temporarily suspending one tactic is not enough. Congress has poured nearly $25 trillion into immigration enforcement. ICE and other agencies are funded at the military level, with none of the accountability or oversight that comes with that authority.”
“This is not sustainable. The families affected and the American people deserve answers for the details of these tragic killings, but this is bigger than any case or investigation. Congress must make bold, overdue changes to immigration law to restore credibility and humanity to immigration enforcement in American communities.”
“There is a better way. A functioning immigration system should be guided by four fundamental principles: first, giving long-time immigrant residents the opportunity to properly understand the law; second, clear and targeted public safety priorities; and third, addressing violations of the law rather than deporting everyone.” and, finally, increased accountability for curbing abuse by federal agents. The sole focus now is on deportation and the pursuit of detention, which makes violence and tragic death inevitable.Mass deportation is unsafe and creates danger.
