The Boston College Eagles Football Team (4-3, 1-2 ACC) is currently on a two-game losing streak heading into a home matchup against the Louisville Cardinals.
Most recently, the Eagles lost 42-21 to the Virginia Tech Hokies on Thursday night in Blacksburg, Virginia.
A lot of things went wrong for Boston College in this contest, but one of the positives of the night was the performance of defensive back Cameron Martinez. As a transfer to Ohio State, he totaled seven tackles (five solo, two assists), two lost tackles, one sack, one interception, and one fumble recovery.
Alumni shared their thoughts on Monday’s outing.
“It felt really good,” Martinez said. “Obviously, I got off to a slow start, I just started the season with an injury, and I felt like I was the last player in this program, so I was just kind of catching up on everything. I’m working hard. So it felt good to play that game and like I said, I had put in a lot of work during the week so I was able to go out there and enjoy it and play like that. Like I said, it would have been nice to win, but it’s definitely good that we played well.”
The Muskegon, Michigan, native scored 14 of Boston College’s 21 total points with key plays in the third quarter, including an interception and a fumble recovery on back-to-back drives. He was also sacked in the third attempt.
Martinez believes this is the first time his stat line has been like this in a quarter, but he didn’t realize it until after the game.
“No, I didn’t realize it until after the game, I didn’t really notice it,” Martinez said. “I feel like we’re in a good groove, the team is coming back and playing well and yeah, just playing my game and then I look up and I’m like, wow, that’s crazy, but definitely. I thought it felt good.”
His departure comes on the heels of the Eagles’ defense losing a key piece of its defense in cornerback Amari Jackson. Amari Jackson is out for the season with a torn ACL.
Martinez talked about stepping up in Jackson’s absence.
“Yeah. I mean, I’ve had a lot of conversations with the coaches the last few weeks and obviously when he goes down, we talked about how some guys have to step up,” Martinez said. spoke. “He’s a really good player and irreplaceable, but obviously there are players who need to step up in a different role and I think that’s what they expected from me. Like I said, I wanted to accept that challenge. I feel like I did it. But like I said, we still have a lot of ways to go and we have to get back to winning. Obviously we’ve lost two in a row and a lot of other guys need to step up as well.”
