ALISON BEARD: I’m Alison Beard. ADI IGNATIUS: And I’m ADI IGNATIUS. And this is the HBR IdeaCast. ALISON BEARD: So Adi, one thing that I think almost every leader struggles with is delegation, particularly if you have risen through the ranks because you have been a star performer in your field, a producer, someone who gets things done, it can feel really weird to start outsourcing that work, not even rote tasks, but also decision-making to others. ADI IGNATIUS: Yeah, we’ve written about this before and it’s absolutely key. First of all, nobody wants to work for a micromanager. Secondly,…
Why are subpeople cruel? Why are sub-governments cruel? Does a cruel government need cruel citizens? I refer to the cruel definition of Merriam Webster, “inflicting pain and suffering, lacking a humanitarian sense.” Cruel people are cruel and need to experience cruelty. In other words, cruelty is an argument for his utility functions. He satisfies this preference when he can do it at a price I consider to be acceptable. This is a standard price theory model, and it keeps grasping all the criticisms. The individual maximizes his usefulness given his preferences and the constraints he faces. Why is it cruel…
James Galbraith: The Top Economist Employment Crash Contradicts the “skill-biased technological change” theory useful for elites
Professor Lawrence Katz of Harvard University is co-authored with Professor Claudia Goldin of Harvard University, a book defining mainstream theory of the modern labor market. Titled “Race of Education and Technology,” Goldin-Katz’s book tells how supply and demand determine the relative wages of skilled labor. Simply put, when science and technology arises first, skilled wages and salaries increase, and inequality increases. As education catches up, wage gaps decrease. This is an education paradox. You need to move on, but as you pursue it, the benefits fade away. Goldin-Katz theory is widely used (if not always explicit) (if not always explicit)…

Business Metric Selection Framework Level 4 of the Kirkpatrick model represents the ultimate measurement task. Connect your learning activities to concrete business outcomes. However, traditional approaches are often lacking here. Treat Level 4 as a single monolithic concept. In practice, business impact measurement requires a nuanced understanding of which metrics are important for different types of training interventions. Not all business metrics are created equal, and you can derail your ROI metrics before the wrong choices begin. The key is to identify the following metrics: Training that is directly affected by knowledge, skills, or behavior can be measurable and copingable…

Propublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates power abuse. Sign up for Dispatches. This is a newsletter that spotlights misconduct across the country, where you receive your stories in your inbox every week. When a source first told me about the Lloyd Gray case in late 2024, I wrote down these notes: two black ju umpires, Swastika and Gov. Jeff Landry. It was oversimplified of deep and troubling issues, but it also reached the heart of the story released this week by Propovica and Verite News, who have plagued Louisiana and continue to do so for a foreseeable future. Gray…
