Art Education Assistant or Associate Professor
Successful candidates will be appointed to the position of assistant or associate professor in Aalto University’s tenure-track system. This position will begin in August 2025, or as agreed.
Aalto University’s Faculty of Arts and Media is internationally known for its innovative, interdisciplinary, and high-quality artworks, media production, arts education activities, scholarship, and research. The emphasis is on the study of contemporary art, media, arts education and pedagogy in a wide range of cultural and social contexts, in collaboration with science, digital technologies and business. To maintain its leadership in these fields, the Aalto School of Art, Design and Architecture (ARTS) has established a tenure-track or tenure-track program for arts education, whose mission is to develop research and teaching that has a significant impact on society at large. We are recruiting ex-officio professors.
This position is located in the School of Arts and Media and offers degree programs and doctoral education in the following areas: Visual communication design; visual culture, curation, contemporary art. Game design and development. Photography; new media sounds; and new media. In addition, there is a BA program in Design and Media shared with the Faculty of Design, a Nordic Master’s program in Visual Studies and Art Education (NM NoVA) double degree program with Aalborg University (Denmark), and a Replay and Unit of Erasmus Mundus program. Interdisciplinary art research. Education in the Department of Arts and Media is conducted in English, Finnish and Swedish. The department’s arts education scholarship is active beyond these programs and closely tracks contemporary national and international developments.
Role and requirements
The emphasis of the professorship is on broad and interdisciplinary research and development of domestic arts education through international collaboration. Aalto ARTS and the Faculty of Arts and Media are playing a leading role in this development, and are therefore committed to promoting research and social impact in arts education and linking arts education to other fields such as science, media and technology. , profiling this professorship. .
The Assistant/Associate Professor of Art Education is expected to be an exceptional educator, researcher and leader, well versed in the Finnish, Nordic and international contemporary art education context and its new interdisciplinary aspects .
Professors bring their special expertise to the Department of Arts and Media’s vibrant community. He is expected to help develop a vision for innovative bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral education, and to guide and strengthen existing research practices at all levels. This position requires active participation in service to the Aalto University community. Experience or plans to hold a leadership position in a national/international research or professional organization is also part of this professorship. Particularly important is the commitment and focus on social interaction as well as national and international cooperation.
The selected candidate will be expected to conduct and supervise research as an assistant or associate professor. Educates students and participates in curriculum development and lifelong learning education initiatives. They are expected to introduce students to the complex and diverse relationships between arts and pedagogy, and to support the advancement of related fields and their interdisciplinary relationships. At all levels of the tenure-track system, professors are expected to teach and provide academic leadership at the doctoral, master’s, and bachelor’s levels.
