Troy Palmquist has used custom scented candles throughout his career in real estate. This is why private label scents can be one of the most effective branding tools in an agent’s arsenal.
Recently I found myself doing something I haven’t done in a while. We walked around the candle-making facility, testing scents, selecting wax blends, and discussing containers and labels.
The purpose of this simple project was to create a small custom year-end gift. But as I moved around the warehouse, sniffing from sample to sample, I remembered something I had done before in my retail showroom and brokerage days: using scent intentionally.
And it raised questions that I don’t think our industry talks about enough. We instruct our agents not to use fragrances in their listings, and for good reason. Strong scents arouse suspicion. Buyers assume something is hidden. Plug-in scent diffusers are a big no-no.
But what if you don’t use scent to hide something? What if you use it to create a moment?
Scent works – whether we realize it or not
When it comes to our senses, scent is processed differently than other senses. It goes directly to the parts of the brain associated with memory and emotion. It’s not a marketing joke. It’s neuroscience.
That’s important because in real estate, decisions are not always as rational as we would like to make them seem.
Delicate, clean scents, such as fresh linens, light citrus, and soft seasonal scents, quietly influence the way a space feels. It’s not noisy. It’s not obvious. Just enough to make you feel “comfortable,” “calm,” and “attractive” is enough.
The key word here is subtle.
Why Signature Candles Work as Brand Tools
If you’ve ever shopped at Anthropologie, you’ve probably experienced the power of signature scents for yourself. Its signature Capri Blue Volcano candle is as recognizable as a visual brand element.
For real estate professionals, the real opportunity from a branding perspective isn’t the candle itself. It’s how it shows up in the overall client experience.
Creates a natural conversation starter
At every open house, people say, “That candle smells really nice.”
That’s not small talk. It begins: “This is actually my own signature candle. I have several on hand and would be happy to send one to you if you would like.”
You’ve created a reason to exchange information that doesn’t feel forced or transactional.
Luxury without being too flashy
The estate is filled with branded freebies, including engraved knives, logoed wine openers, and tote bags. Most are fine. Hardly anything memorable.
A well-made private label candle feels considered. It informs the taste. And unlike novelty items, they are actually used.
Enhances brand memory
When a client lights that candle months later and is reminded of you, even if just for a moment, it strengthens your brand in a way that no postcard can replicate.
Where custom candles fit into your real estate workflow
This doesn’t mean turning agents into candle salespeople. It’s about careful placement within your brokerage firm or team’s marketing ecosystem.
Open House: The lights turn on briefly before the door opens, then turn off. You can keep the fragrance forever without overwhelming the space. Staging: Treat it like a design element: a tray on your kitchen counter, a nightstand, or a vignette in your bathroom. Closing gift: Pair a custom candle with a wine bottle or handwritten note. It feels personal without being overdone. Seasonal customer gifts: Giving one candle once or twice a year is much more impactful than multiple common drop-offs.
It’s not about candles, it’s about creating an experience
A good agent does more than just sell homes. They shape how people remember processes. An elegant custom candle with your signature scent is one of the easiest ways to tap into emotional responses, sensory cues, and reminders that the details matter to you.
In a business built on trust, memory, and connection, these details can make the difference between what first comes to mind and “Who is that?”
