This experiment teaches many scientific fundamentals, including the different stages of a substance and how they change, the effects of temperature on solubility, and the complexity of how heat is transmitted.

Watch this video and get step-by-step instructions in the following format:
Required materials:
Half cup half half ¼ 1 tsp vanilla 1 tablespoon sugar 1 gallon size plastic zip top bag 1 quart size plastic zip top bag
Ice cream for the experimental steps of the bag:
1. Pour half and half into a small zip top bag.
Carefully add vanilla and sugar. Seal the buggy tightly.
2. Add rock salt and ice to a large zip top bag.
3. Place the small buggy inside the small buggy.
Seals the large buggy tightly.
4. Shake the buggy and squeeze until the ice cream is thick.
This can take 5-10 minutes.
5. Remove the small buggies and enjoy a delicious snack!
Tip: This set of directions allows small groups of students to have one spoon each. To make enough for the entire class, you need to triple the recipe at small group time or create several batches.
