The Education Arts team, known for its dedication to increasing access to the arts in the Jersey City community, celebrates its 50th anniversary this month.
Founded in 1974 by Carmine Taborn and a group of passionate artists, the organization has been dedicated to providing access to artistic expression to children from diverse backgrounds.
This milestone was highlighted at a gala celebration on October 18, 2024, attended by over 200 guests, including former teachers, staff, campers, and supporters. While the event served as an opportunity to honor the past, it also highlighted the significant impact the Educational Arts team has had on Jersey City.
“We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone with the community that has supported us for half a century,” said Roxy Arojo, executive director of the Educational Arts Team. “We honor the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future of arts education in our community.”
Throughout its history, the organization has developed a variety of programs centered around literacy, social-emotional learning, sustainability, and arts initiatives. These efforts reach children and families in schools, community centers, and libraries across Jersey City and Northern New Jersey, keeping the arts accessible.
Community leaders recognize the important role of educational arts teams in shaping the lives of young people. Mayor Stephen Fulop congratulated the organization, saying, “We sincerely congratulate the Education Arts team for their 50 years of providing creative outlets and educational opportunities through the arts to generations of Jersey City residents.” .
State Sen. Angela V. McKnight praised the organization’s transformative impact, saying, “The Educational Arts Team program turns learning into a vibrant journey, helping young people discover creativity and build confidence through the magic of the arts.” “I will be able to build it.”
