Texas Tech entered its mid-October bye week with a 5-1 record and a perfect 3-0 start to Big 12 conference play, but that hasn’t been the case the past two weeks for the Red Raiders. .
Tech lost to TCU 35-34, and the Red Raiders were blown away in the fourth quarter, holding a 31-14 lead late in the third, only to see it slip away en route to their second straight loss. Coach Joey McGuire expressed his frustration: I missed the opportunity to play meaningful soccer in November.
“That’s the frustrating part. We wanted to qualify for the Iowa State game this week with one bowl loss. They’re undefeated and we felt it was going to be a big game,” McGuire said Saturday. He spoke after the game that night. “This goes back to what we talked about in the summer, about having meaningful games at media day in November, but it means more than just getting a bowl berth. Now Things are changing little by little.”

Although the loss slowed the momentum that had been built heading into the 2024 season and throughout McGuire’s three-year tenure in Lubbock, McGuire said he was right, knowing that his opportunity would come soon. I look forward to continuing to build the program in that direction. Abandoning the coach.
“I want to tell you guys, believe me or not, there’s no one who wants to win for this fan base more than me,” McGuire said. “It bothers me that people are upset, and it bothers me. It’s not that they’re mad at me. Again, say whatever you want. I’m off to business on Saturday. It bothers me that people feel this is Red Raider because they couldn’t believe it or what it isn’t. Please, it is, I’m going to fix it.”
McGuire expects the Red Raiders to finish the season on a high note. There are only four games left on the schedule, but nothing is going to be easy from here on out.
“There’s a lot of stuff on the table. I know no one wants to hear this, but this is what I told the team yesterday,” McGuire said. “We haven’t won four straight bowl games since Mike Leach, but we have a chance to get there. We go back to 1932, but I know they’ve been playing since 1925, but Texas Tech has never won a bowl game. We’ve never won four games in a row. We have an opportunity to do that. We believe we can beat anyone on our schedule and Texas Tech has won nine games. This is the first time since 2009 that we have the opportunity to achieve that.”
