BUNKY, La. (KALB) – Having secured $15 million for roads and infrastructure improvements in the 28th District, state Rep. Darryl Deschotels (R-28th District)’s next project will transform the Picard Education and Recreation Center in Bunkie into the Avoyelles Parish School of Education Converting it into a sports facility. Complicated.
Currently, through the Office of Juvenile Justice, the 160-acre campus houses youth groups, business and professional organizations, and faith-based organizations.

“Avoyelles is a farming community, and that is what drives our economy. Now is the time to look outside of agriculture and see what else is out there,” Deschotels said. he said. “I think this is a great opportunity to bring people from all over the state to our parish. It’s not only going to be good for local residents and local children, it’s going to be good for our tax base. I guess.”
Deschotels, accompanied by Louisiana House Speaker Philippe De Villiers (R-41st District), traveled the state to meet with state representatives and review their priorities.
“It really helped us go back to Baton Rouge and draft policy around each member’s priorities and work together to unite everyone in the state and see what we can do to move Louisiana forward.” ” he said.
After securing funding for the sports complex, Deshotels said the facility would be used for more than just athletics.
“We are planning to add an educational component to this complex,” he said. “We will be able to provide after-school individual instruction.We will be able to offer a variety of classes.It is planned to become a more community-based facility rather than just a sports and recreation complex.We will also conduct health checkups here. I’m going to create a digital library here.
Deschotels said he is awaiting final plans and expects to be ready for bidding in the first quarter of 2025.
