One-fifth (20%) describe generative AI as an “established and well-integrated part” of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), and one-third (33%) say that generative AI is at least an “established and well-integrated part” of the SDLC. Some report that generative AI is “widely used.”
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 17, 2024 /CNW/ — A new report from MIT Technology Review Insights reveals how generative AI is already transforming the SDLC and what’s next.

The report Transforming Software with Generative AI is produced in partnership with Globant and is based on research conducted on the use of generative AI by enterprises in the SDLC. The 302 executives who responded represented a wide range of industries and worked in organizations around the world. The report also includes in-depth interviews with industry experts from GitHub, Amazon Web Services, International Data Corporation, MIT, Google, and Globant.
“There’s a parallel between what’s happening with AI and when digital transformation first happened,” said Carolina Dolan Chandler, chief digital officer at Globant. “AI is a necessary change. AI will impact every job in every way, but it will be a long-term process.”
Here are the findings:
Significant benefits from generative AI in SDLC are still in store. Only 12% of business leaders surveyed said this technology has “fundamentally” changed the way software is developed today. However, future benefits are widely expected, with 38% of respondents believing that generative AI will “significantly” change most organizations’ SDLC within one to three years.
While the use of generative AI in SDLC is nearly universal, adoption is far from comprehensive. 94% of respondents said they use some form of generative AI in software development. One-fifth (20%) describe generative AI as an “established and well-integrated part” of the SDLC, and one-third (33%) describe it as “widely used” in at least part of the SDLC. It has been reported that
Generative AI is not just for code generation. While software creation may be the most obvious use case, most respondents (82%) report using generative AI in at least two phases of their SDLC, and a quarter (26%) say they use generative AI in four or more phases.
Generative AI is already meeting or exceeding expectations in the SDLC. Although there is room for growth in how fully generative AI is integrated into software development workflows, 46% of survey respondents say generative AI is already meeting expectations.
AI agents represent the next frontier. Looking to the future, nearly half (49%) of leaders believe advanced AI tools such as assistants and agents will improve efficiency and reduce costs.
story continues
“Generative AI is already widely used in software development, but its full impact is yet to be seen,” said Laurel Ruma, global director of custom content at MIT Technology Review. “As adoption continues to grow, with 94% of companies already incorporating some form of generative AI, the next few years will be pivotal in redefining the SDLC.”
