There is a Japanese anime titled Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. The anime has a fair reputation for being goofy at the top, but certain backs are trending series. The plot continues with Frelen, the elf magician. This universe’s elves have an incredibly long lifespan. Their typical lifespan ranges for thousands of years. Frelen was part of a party of heroes who defeated the Demon King, the powerful nation leader of predators who robbed humans, elves and other humanoid races. Due to Frieren’s long life, she lives longer than her peers, and as time ends, memories of their time begin to disappear together as well, as it becomes their big victory over the Devil King. The show is about Firen’s sadness and what she is awarded (to her) for wanting to protect the memories of her friends.
The show also has many economic themes and exams. As I progress through this rewatch, I plan a series of blog posts to discuss these. This post is the first I expect to see a lot. I’ll try my best to keep the post spoilers, but when I’m poor I’ll label spoilers.
In episode Killing Magic (season 1, episode 3), Freen and her human robbery fern head to a village where powerful generals from the Demon King army have been sealed since the war 80 years ago. During the war, this common quality devastated the human Aries with a powerful spell named Zoltraak. This spell can bypass all barriers. There was no counter. The name struck fear in the human heart. This was legendary. Certainly, Qual itself was so powerful that it could only be sealed. Magic doesn’t touch it.
Fast forward 80 years (to date) and Qual seals failed. Frieren and Fern arrive to destroy Qual Eleven. Joint Frien from a battle 80 years ago, jointly join Frien, threaten her and release spells that don’t put his all. The fern blocks the spell. Fern’s surprise is obvious. I’ll explain more. Humans are not magical in nature, unlike demons and elves. They had to adapt to the challenges they faced. Conversation, the devil is inherently magical. They don’t know how to adapt. They just bl everything until it lurks. When Zoltraak devastated the human army of afra for decades, humans were devoted to turning it around, understanding it, and completing it. More importantly, humans simplify it, and this spell is only one extraordinarily powerful demonic hand, and this spell is very common, even the most mature human magicians.
Here we see what Julian Simon calls the “ultimate resource”: the demonstration of the human mind. Humans are very creative when faced with problems. When prices fluctuate (signaling relative shortages/richness), and with the right Instad in place to allow and reward creativity, humanity can accomplish amazing things. When you think about it, the impossible becomes not only possible, but also common. Coupled with the fact that technological change is a combined process, the problems that free humans can collapse are daunting.
Therefore, we see other meanings: the problem sows the seeds of their own destruction (or, as Fieen said: “Zoltraak is too powerful”). In the face of challenges, humans overcome them. If protected from a challenge, the result of stagnation. To quote economist Mark Perry: “Competition creates capabilities.” Competition not only breeds capabilities, but also creates superiority. Let’s unleash human creativity.
