INDIANAPOLIS — 13News is talking to candidates who could have a big impact on our lives in hopes of running for the state’s biggest office in next month’s election.
Two candidates running for the U.S. Senate, Republican Rep. Jim Banks and Democrat Dr. Valerie McCray, shared their views on immigration.
“Send illegal immigrants back to where they came from. Start with the criminals. Start with those who have committed violent crimes in the United States and deport them. Send them back and get them out of the country,” Banks said. . “And we’re going to hold businesses that employ illegal workers accountable as well. I think if we take away the incentive for people to come here illegally in the first place, they’ll start going home and this country will be better off.”
“One of the things I’ve always been reminded of is that people don’t want to leave their homes, they want to stay home. There’s a situation. There’s something they’re looking for. They need safety, they need a life that’s not so dangerous,” McCray said. “So we need to embrace that and make sure we have legislation in place to make that transition smoother.”
“We must fix our legal immigration policy, abolish the visa lottery system, and replace it with a merit-based approach that puts the needs of Americans and the American economy, our economy, above the needs of foreign countries. Yes. Here’s how.’ You figure it out,” Banks said.
“One of the things we have to consider, as well as global warming, is that people are going to be moving around the world and countries are coming together to think about what we can do and how. We need to think about whether we can intervene and how we can respond.”How many people can we take in, how many people can we take in in a humane way, so we can welcome them?” , we are ready for immigrants coming from across the country and around the world,” McCray said.
