The Four Seasons Hotel New York, owned by Beanie Babies creator Ty Warner, is reopening after a four-year hiatus. Starting today, Warner’s part-time residence will be available for rent on Billionaire’s Row in midtown Manhattan, known for its ultra-wealthy residents and luxury high-rise buildings.
According to the New York Post, the first $1,000-a-night hotels debuted in the 1990s, but today’s minimum room rates are more than double that.
The 52-story hotel at 57 East 57th Street was closed during the pandemic and briefly repurposed to house first responders, but staff have since been furloughed.
However, the reason for the long-term closure remains unclear, although reports suggest there is an ongoing dispute between Warner and the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts Management Company, which manages the property. .
The Four Seasons Biltmore in Santa Barbara, also owned by a billionaire, remains closed as well, though Four Seasons announced in June that it plans to reopen in spring 2025.
Renovated by architect IM Pei, the modernly decorated rooms at Four Seasons Hotel New York now span the 20th to 52nd floors. Located on the 52nd floor, the Ty Warner Penthouse spans 4,300 square feet and features four glass balconies with panoramic views of Manhattan.
The luxurious interior features hand-lacquered walls with mother-of-pearl work by American artist Nancy Lorenz, and ceiling-to-floor bronze and vine leaf designs by French sculptors Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne. Hotel executives told The Post that the hotel’s next phase will include a luxury extended-stay building from floors 5 to 19 with amenities such as a gym, cocktail bar, steam room and family services. The company plans to offer rentals.
In addition to New York, Warner also owns the Kona Village Resort in Hawaii. Las Ventanas Al Paraiso Resort in Los Cabos, Mexico. and San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California, where President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie honeymooned.
According to Forbes, Mr. Warner used the profits he made from selling Beanie Babies, the trendy stuffed animals, to build a portfolio of luxury hotels. His net worth currently stands at $6.5 billion.
