With Elon Musk’s government efficiency members getting more and more intense all over the government these days, attention is being drawn to young Silicon Valley engineers wielding immeasurable powers in the new administration.
However, Propublica has identified three elite facilities qualified lawyers who also participated in Doge’s efforts.
The two are former Supreme Court clerks. One is written for Secretary John Roberts and the other for Judge Neil Gorsach – the third was chosen as Secretary Gorsach for the term of office in 2025-2026.
Two of the lawyer’s names have not been reported to be working at Doge before.
According to records reviewed by Propublica, all three — Keenan Kmiec, James Burnham and Jacob Altik — have Doge’s email addresses to the President’s Executive Office. Altik was recently an attorney for the company Weil, Gotshal & Manges, but his biopage is now offline. Neither the White House nor the three lawyers responded immediately to requests for comment on their role.
Referring to Doge Work, the White House told Propublica in a statement earlier this week.
But Doge’s aggressive actions across the government have already drawn lawsuits claiming the group has broken the law.
What we see
During Donald Trump’s second presidency, Propovica will focus on areas that need scrutiny. Below are some of the issues reporters watch, and how to safely communicate with them.
We are doing something new. Helpful?
The legal challenges posed by several groups could ultimately reach the Supreme Court. For example, this week, the Democratic Attorney General said that more than 12 Democrats will sue Doge’s Treasury Department’s payment system to block access to Doge’s Treasury Department’s payment system, while the federal employee union is entitled to the US International Development Agency He appealed to challenge the Doge-led dismantling.
“What’s notable is how the administration appears to be a limitation of traditional administrative law, in a way that may cause them to get in trouble.” “When this happens to court, it’s important to One question is:
Trump officially created the Doge in an executive order on the first day of his administration. The order details the agency’s agency about a team of at least four people (leaders, lawyers, human resources experts and engineers). The way Doge is currently structured is not clear, nor is it a specific challenge for each Doge lawyer identified by Propublica.
Trump has given Musk, the world’s wealthiest person, vast power to seize control of government agencies, their offices and staff. “He’s a very talented guy in terms of management and cost, and we were in charge of seeing what he can do with a particular group or a certain number,” Trump said of Musk on Monday. He spoke, “Elon can’t do anything without our approval.”
The Trump administration refused to provide information about who works in Musk’s Doge group. More than 20 members of this effort have been identified, and Propublica is compiling them as part of an ongoing reporting project.
A little more about the three Doge lawyers recently identified by Propublica:
James Burnham, whose title of Doge is listed internally as the General Counsel, is a prominent lawyer in the conservative legal world. During Trump’s first term, Burnham said he was taken to the White House lawyer’s office by Don McGurn, the firm’s top lawyer. He said he worked on the administration’s judicial choice process, including the appointment of Gorsuch to the High Court. He continued to work for the Trump Department of Justice and Gorsuch in 2020.
“He’s a smart guy and a very conservative lawyer,” Ty Cobb, the first Trump White House lawyer, said of Burnham in an interview.
According to its website, Burnham later launched a litigation finance fund with a boutique law firm. The New York Times reported in January, Burnham also helped Doge before Trump took office, the New York Times reported.
Keenan Kmiec’s career has recently become Crypto, from elite law. According to LinkedIn, he was written to Roberts’ Supreme Court after overseeing then-Samuel Alito in the Federal Circuit for his term of office from 2006 to 2007. He stinted at a corporate law firm and had his own company focused on insider trading litigation.
KMIEC appears to be interested in Crypto long before it became mainstream. My friend wrote an essay published online to meet KMIEC at an Irish pub in Dupont Circle, Washington in the mid-2010s. There, the man spoke about “central bank errors, the libertarian movement, and Bitcoin.”
In 2021, KMIEC began working for a Swiss foundation, which promotes blockchain, called Tezos, according to LinkedIn. He then worked for nine months as CEO of a now-deprecated startup called Interpop. This explained as “fakes the future of digital fandom with responsibly created cartoons, games and collectible NFTS” by the Tezos blockchain. A former Interpop staff member described the company as a magical refinement in an interview: The Gathering Card Game. However, the former staff member added, “We ran out of money and the game failed.”
There is little in the public domain about KMIEC’s political views. In 2009 he wrote a column for politics criticizing the widespread use of the term “judicial activity.” Federal election records show he gave Barack Obama $500 the campaign the previous year. Kmiec’s father, Douglas Kmiec, a former Reagan administration lawyer and a well-known conservative law professor, has made headlines to support Obama. (Obama later named Ambassador Douglas Kmiec Ambassador to Malta.)
Doge’s lawyer Jacob Altik is a 2021 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School. According to his law school announcement confirmed by a Supreme Court spokesman, Altic has been selected as secretary for Gorsuch in the Supreme Court for a term that begins this summer.
Altik recently worked as a corporate litigation associate at Weil, previously written in the Court of Appeals of the DC Circuit Court. He also interned at a nonprofit called the New Civil Liberties Union, which was at the forefront of legal efforts to curb the power of federal agencies.
These names, along with over 20 others, have been added to ProPublica’s ongoing Project Tracking DOGE members.
