The iconic Wall Street bull statue on Tuesday was destroyed by a group of environmental activists who sprayed neon green paint on bronze sculptures.
The group, known as the Extinction Rebellion, drew the phrase “greed = death,” a symbol of bulls, a symbol of the burgeoning stock market at Bowling Green Park near the New York Stock Exchange. Tuesday marks the 56th annual “Earth Day” first observed in 1970.
“Good morning from resistance. We came to Wall Street to call the bull —,” the activist group said on social media site X.
One of the protesters, who climbed up and sat on the bull’s neck, was told to descend by a New York City police officer.
Later Tuesday, a group of activists cleaned green paint from the bull after the demonstration.
The sculpture, created by Arturodi Modica, a Sicilian immigrant to New York, was originally installed in front of the stock exchange in 1989, but later moved south to its current location, according to the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation.
