
Drop control and learn to be a guide
As a teacher, you must have heard that the role of educators has shifted from the “sage on stage” to the “side guide”. What does this mean?
Control problem
Teachers are used to controlling. We love what will happen, when it happens, and how it will happen. And if the students do not cooperate with the way we want it, the students are negligent or dull or just mischief. We are reluctant to release a little control and allow students to be the best!
Today’s experience
Therefore, two elementary school students in the class right next to my office are making noise hell. This is the first period, and related teachers cannot be used. I have been there several times to stop making noise, and that doesn’t work. 。 。 After that, the idea will come -engaging with them!
Hire a student
What was my idea of attracting students? Would you like to sit quietly and read a book? Good, but very passive and consumed. Standing in front of them, telling something, they still listen to me? Good but passive. The problem is that students may be passive or active in the class. They can be consumers and producers. Therefore, while talking about the involvement of students, we must create students and aggressive producers aiming for the best involvement.
Select my engagement: We draw!
So, I say, “I’m going to draw a class and bring out your books and pencils,” and look back and the silent classes that were once threatened. Now, let’s do this. Everyone is set … what do we draw? So I looked around, got an empty plastic waste bottle, put it on a chair in front of the class, and asked to draw.
The result was surprising. I saw all kinds … Some brought out the ruler, others used pencils, and some used a pen that used. “What is this?” But I always set up my thumb for all students, regardless of what they drew.
Lesson 1: Enchants all students
This was the first practical lesson I had. Some of my students were late. They looked at the object for a long time and could not pull it out to the book. Others ended in a few minutes. So I moved around the class and tried to see what each child drew. I don’t want to draw or turn a wet book page by organizing the imaginary abstractions in my head, so I bend them several times so that I can find relatively dry pages. I had to reach some of them. To draw.
Lessons and teachers must have as much personal time as possible with each child. Their reluctance may not be lazy or dull. They may simply need to attend personally.
Lesson 2: Provides appropriate feedback
Feedback 1: Encouragement
The first kind of feedback I provided was encouraging. Some of those children have it in them, but they need someone to tell them that they can do it. Yes, some people did not draw what I wanted, but they tried a great attempt. Many people made a mistake in their perspectives, simply drawing them all flat, but I had to maintain my thumb. 。 Please encourage the students, it is a great form of feedback!
Feedback 2: Please show them
The other feedback I provided was to show them what I expected. So I went to the board and drew what they expected, I saw the object and drew it myself! Then I asked them to draw again, but this time I copied what they saw on the board. Of course, the second round of the drawing was much better. When providing feedback, teachers need to draw and show what they expect, so that students can improve their work. Give the students feedback on the feedback and show what is expected.
Feedback 3: Individual work feedback
The last type of feedback I have started is individual feedback. So I went to this student and she drew a chair (a waste basket was placed). However, the chair had only three feet, facing a different direction. So we look at it together, and after my usual “encouragement feedback”, I “these feet are not straight, how are you sitting without falling?” I said. She got it and re -round the chair legs. Another person drew a cup on a distorted base. When I bend, I drew a line just below the lowest point of the cup and assumed that this is the table where this cup is placed, how are your cup sitting? ” I did it. A wise student got it again, improved his work, and balanced the cup! Providing personalized feedback to students will help students think about their work, processes, and the next improvement method.
Maximum lessons: Drop the control and become a simple guide!
The students felt it was really difficult to draw waste bottle and chairs. “Can you draw something else?” Wow … Why didn’t I think before? “Sure, yes … everyone can draw and draw what you like,” this is the place where the real shock began and the biggest lesson!
They drew a comfortable thing, but the children who couldn’t “draw” at once began to surprise me in their paintings. Some drew flags, some cars, some houses, several cups, and two students painted complex pictures. They brought out the label of the product and began to draw what was on it. Some people drew it with a pen! Our best as an educator is to move to the side, lead the students, and lead the best roles instead of controlling them, as we should aim for!
What was happening here?
The mission was to be involved in them and confirm that they drew something. I tried to “control” what they drew, but I got various results. They did not get it and couldn’t draw it like a friend, so some people drew their faces. But when I left it to their expressions and moved from the control (sage on the stage) to the guide (side), I saw the best among each student. Has the mission achieved? Yes, that’s … but I gave up the control that I had to instruct what to draw, so I thought it was even better.

There is a level of creativity that occurs when students are left to select some aspects of our tasks. The teachers definitely have more jobs because they had to provide different individual feedback to each student based on what they were drawn, but that’s because they can’t draw a bottle of discarded paper. Just leave the child knows that they are not dallard! It was a great 30 minute learning for me, and I am looking forward to getting such opportunities again.
