After years of testing, Robotaxis has begun to become a normal part of transportation in certain regions of the US and China, where a few companies compete to become market leaders. In the US, Alphabet’s Waymo is pulling ahead of its rivals, saying it has more than 1,500 Robotaxis on roads that make over 250,000 paid trips in cities such as San Francisco, Texas, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Austin. In China, Barclays estimates released last week show that there are around 2,000 Robotaxis, run primarily by local businesses in some of the major cities across the country. UK banks have at least 300,000 Robotaxis rolled out in China by 2030, accounting for at least 5% of on-demand transport in major cities. China’s capital, Beijing, allowed Robotaxi operators to charge fares for suburban rides starting in the second half of 2021. In late July, Shanghai became the latest region that allows fully autonomous taxis to charge fares in parts of the city. Pony AI Unique US listed Chinese startup Pony AI is so far the only Robotaxi operator that can charge the public for fares in parts of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, which are part of all four of China’s biggest cities.
