Propublica has announced that Ryan Little and Kevin Uhrmacher have been hired as assistant editors of the Data and News Applications team. As little as one of the two assistant data editors, Uhrmacher acts as the assistant news application editor. Together, we will enhance Propublica’s editing capabilities and streamline collaboration between data, interactive and reporting teams.
“We are very pleased that Ryan and Kevin are joining us at Propublica,” said Ken Schwencke, senior editor of Data and News Applications. “They are great managers and journalists and we’re excited to bring them in and make the already good journalism from these teams even better.”
Little joined Baltimore Banner’s Propublica, where she served as a data editor and worked on stories that have received honors such as the Pulitzer Award, the George Polk Award, and the Investigative Reporter and Editor Award. These stories include a series that uncovers the urban overdose crisis, including a nightmare Baltimore student going to school, as well as the vessels of wrist rests that have collapsed the Francis Scott Key Bridge are more common than previously known. During his time at Banner, he did not work as a Roy W. Howard Fellow at Mother Jones.
In 2022, they had not previously collaborated with Propublica in 2022 on a Department of Justice investigation and a rent price survey that led to a settlement with Greyster, the country’s largest landlord.
He holds a master’s degree from the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill Journalism College and also teaches data journalism.
“Propublica sets the standard for accountability data journalism and we are pleased to be part of our team,” Little said. “I want to pursue a bold, impactful job together.”
Uhrmacher came to ProPublica from the Washington Post, where he worked for over 11 years, but recently he worked as a graphics assignment editor who oversees data visualization and interactive stories. Uhrmacher was the driving force behind some of the most impactful visual journalism in the post, including editing graphics on works that are part of the three Pulitzer Prizes.
He has launched numerous trackers, including those that follow the state abortion laws and presidential appointees. He also served as a graphic editor and project manager for database-driven stories detailing the history of Congress’s slavery, which received the Salute to Excellence Award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
“We are pleased to be part of Propublica’s Stellar News Applications team, including being an industry leader in interactive accountability journalism and making outcome data more accessible to the public,” Uhrmacher said. “Propoblica’s work exposing public trust abuse on a global, national and local scale will be a top destination for journalists and I am honored to have this role on me.”
