Google has appointed Prabhakar Raghavan as its new chief engineer. Mr. Raghavan previously served as senior vice president at Google, where he was responsible for Google search, Assistant, geolocation, advertising, commerce, and payments products. His role will be taken over by Nick Fox, CEO Sundar Pichai announced in an internal memo on October 17th.
The development comes days after Google began restructuring its core business teams, citing competition and changing user behavior.
Educational background of Prabhakar Raghavan
Raghavan earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1981, followed by a master’s degree from the University of California in 1982. He then earned a PhD in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. 1986.
Dr. Raghavan has also received various honors and awards. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. Other honors include an honorary doctorate from the University of Bologna in Italy, the University of California, Berkeley’s Distinguished CS Alumni Award, and being named an IEEE Fellow and an ACM Fellow.
Prior to joining Google, Dr. Prabhakar founded and led Yahoo! Laboratory. Labs at Yahoo!, where he was responsible for search, ad ranking, and ad marketplace design. He later served as the company’s chief strategy officer. Prior to joining Yahoo, he was CTO at Verity and spent more than 14 years at IBM in various roles focused on algorithms, data mining, and machine learning.
He started working at Google in 2012. He led the Google Cloud and Google Apps teams and managed internal products such as Gmail and Google Drive.
