Michelle Obama made her first public campaign appearance with Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday, speaking in Michigan, where polls show a close race between the vice president and former President Donald Trump.
Obama prefers to avoid partisan politics and has remained conspicuously out of the spotlight throughout the 2024 election cycle, with his last formal appearance at the Democratic National Convention in August.
This year, much of her work has focused on increasing voter turnout in battleground states through When We All Vote, a nonprofit she founded in 2018.
In a speech Saturday in Kalamazoo, President Obama said he had “never done this in a long time” and chose to come to Michigan because this year’s election is so close.
Multiple polls, including national polls by The New York Times and Siena College, show the race between Harris and Trump is deadlocked. A Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday shows Harris with a narrow lead, 49% to 46%.
“We need you because, as you know, this race is close right now, too close for my liking,” President Obama said. “And I came here to Michigan because I’m a person who takes her own advice to heart. Because I want to help this country finally turn the page on the politics of hate and division. If there is, I know I can’t just sit there.” No, I have to do something. ”
President Obama, while attacking President Trump, also spoke highly of Harris, his “dear friend.”
“She shows us what a sane, stable leader looks like,” he said of Harris, while criticizing Trump’s White House career and calling him He called him a “convicted felon,” “a known slumlord,” and “a predator found responsible for sexual abuse.” . ”
“You have to ask yourself, ‘Why on earth is this race even closer?'” Obama said.
The former first lady is the latest high-profile supporter to emerge from Harris’ campaign.
