The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department leveraged a $15,000 donation from HEB through Keep McAllen Beautiful for Urban Forests #7 and #8. Urban Forest #7 was planted in Bill Schupp Park by HEB employees for Earth Day earlier this year. Urban Forest #8 at Summer Breeze Park is essential to educating the community about the importance of trees in the future of parks and recreation. The McAllen Urban Forest Initiative began in May 2022 with the planting of the first urban forest in Frontage Park. Since then, the McAllen Parks and Recreation Horticulture Department has led the planting of seven urban forests through volunteers, donations, and project funds.
The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department has launched an urban forestry initiative to plant 36 native trees, at least 2 inches in diameter and 6 to 8 feet tall, in public parks covering land ranging from one-quarter acre to one-half acre.
