FDA removes ‘black box’ warning label for hormone replacement therapy for the ABCs of menopause. This has been a problem for many years. The studies with negative results for HRT were in women over 60 who were well past menopause, which is far from typical use. I was in Australia in the early 2000s when this discovery was announced, and the reaction was very different than in the United States. Local doctors were unimpressed by the rise in cancer cases, saying that while it seemed scary in relative terms, it wasn’t all that serious in absolute terms. A number of small studies have shown that long-term use of HRT (e.g., 10 years or more) is associated with lower all-factor mortality due to less heart disease if HRT is started within 2 years after menopause and/or before age 60 years.
