What is the big lesson you learned in real estate?
You’ll never know everything about this business. As long as we’re in business, we all keep learning. It makes things fun and interesting.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? How does real estate relate to that childhood goal?
I wanted to be an architect. As a child, I used to draw and design houses to sell. True story: I told my mom I was selling my house for $1 million. My mom said, “Well, no one pays a million dollars for a house.” I also had a drafting table when I was a kid.
What is the best advice you have ever received from a mentor or colleague?
Be the best at whatever you do, whether it’s being a newsboy or a CEO. This will determine your career path.
What do you tell new agents before they start doing business with you?
This business is not a “million dollar public offering.” It’s mostly cooperative and not as competitive as it is portrayed on TV. Realistically, the commissions shown on these TV shows usually have to be split 50-50 with at least the agent’s broker and possibly another broker.
What does a customer need to know before starting a real estate transaction?
They need to know and identify their team. The agent is the quarterback of the team. You also need to know the path and process from search to closing, including key terms.
What should everyone do to improve their lives and businesses?
Take regular breaks from work to be more successful, live a better, more balanced life. It’s important to clear your head and take a step back to become the best version of yourself.
If you could do anything other than real estate, what would it be and why?
chef. I love cooking and at one point I was scouted and auditioned for a TV segment on the Food Network.
