HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHP) – Vice presidential candidate and Sen. J.D. Vance is holding a town hall Saturday evening at Harrisburg’s Rock Church.
The main topic of discussion at the town hall was education, with the Trump campaign saying the Trump-Vance administration would “further strengthen” efforts to ensure that every child in Pennsylvania has “access to a first-class education.”
“The vast majority of American children of all races are not receiving a quality education in the United States,” Vance said. “It’s a national scandal.”
“Some public schools need to spend less on bureaucrats and more on teachers and students,” Vance said. “I’ve looked at the statistics, and when you look at the increase in school funding, very little goes to students, very little goes to teachers. It all goes to administrators.”
“I think it’s going to take a little bit of leadership from teachers, teachers’ unions, teachers’ unions, and I’m not kidding, having a come-to-Jesus moment and telling the American people, ‘Yes, we screwed up.’ I think it needs to be said.”
Mr. Vance spoke about how he would change the current education system if elected Vice President of the United States.
“One way to solve this problem is to give scholarships, give every parent who cared for a child, every grandparent, a voucher so they can make the educational choices that make the most sense for their children. I believe in giving to their families. ”
In a press release, the campaign issued the following statement:
The overwhelming majority of Pennsylvania parents support school choice, and more than 60,000 scholarships are awarded annually to K-12 students, giving them the opportunity to attend selective schools. Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act expanded school choice. Parents are now empowered to make important decisions about their children’s education and can use funds from 529 education savings accounts to cover public K-12 tuition. , private, or religious school of one’s choice.
Former President Trump declared education “the civil rights issue of our time” earlier this month.
