This week’s letter will be a bit unconventional.
I would like to put Canada’s changing immigration policy into a global context. However, if you would permit me, I would like to first introduce myself.
Hello! I’m the new Canadian bureau chief for The New York Times.
My family and I moved from Brussels to Toronto in August, where I was the newspaper’s bureau chief, covering the European Union. During my five years there, I focused on the pandemic, the invasion of Ukraine, and other major news impacting Europe.
Since starting his career in his hometown of Athens in the mid-2000s, he has also written extensively on refugee and immigration policy, drawing on reports from the field.
Apart from immigration, I’m very interested in deeply researched stories that hold those in power accountable. I have a track record of covering corruption in both government and the private sector, and I also enjoy cultural stories. Click here to learn more about my background and past life!
If you have a story you’d like to tell me, especially one that people in power don’t want out, email me at matina.stevis@nytimes.com.
