Want to become a leader in real estate? Team Leader Faith Reid writes that developing true expertise and surrounding yourself with people who improve performance starts with developing real expertise.
After over 30 years in the real estate industry, people often ask me how I become recognized as an industry expert in the marketplace. My answer is always the same. It doesn’t happen overnight and it doesn’t happen by chance.
Expertise is built intentionally through discipline, service, and a commitment to long-term growth. Although every professional’s journey is different, these principles have guided my career and serve as a blueprint for anyone who wants to rise to the highest levels in this profession. Here’s how:
Decide early on to master the technique
The first step is to decide not only to be in business, but also to excel in business.
That means committing to learning the ins and outs of real estate, including contracts, negotiations, market trends, financing, buyer and seller resources, and the laws that govern our profession.
Everything changes when you start looking at real estate not just as a job, but as a skill to be learned.
Treat education as a career strategy
Education should never be put off. Throughout my career, I have pursued designations, certifications, leadership training, and educational opportunities. Because each experience has deepened my understanding of the industry.
Education is not just about building knowledge. It builds confidence, credibility, and leadership abilities. If you want to become an expert, make learning a permanent part of your career.
Surround yourself with people who will raise your standards
Your professional environment matters. Seek out mentors, coaches, and colleagues who encourage you to grow and hold you accountable to high standards.
The people around you should inspire you to become better instead of staying where you are. You will grow faster if you surround yourself with people who strive for excellence.
Serve in a profession that is useful to you
Real estate has provided great opportunities for my career and family.
Serving the profession through leadership roles, committees, and industry associations is one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.
This career allows you to gain a deeper understanding of the forces shaping our industry and to participate in protecting and strengthening it. Leadership services transform professionals into industry managers.
Share your knowledge generously
One of the greatest privileges of experience is the opportunity to help others grow. Education, mentoring, and coaching can multiply the impact of what you learn.
When experts share their knowledge, the standards of the profession as a whole improve. Your legacy isn’t just determined by the homes you sell. It is defined by the people you helped grow along the way.
Final advice for the next generation
If you want to become an expert in your market, focus on growth rather than recognition. Study your technique. Invest in your education. Serve the profession. Lift others as you climb.
Because over time, when you do these things consistently, something powerful will start to happen. Your customers trust you. Your colleagues respect you. Your community recognizes you.
And then one day you realize you’re not just participating in the industry anymore. You are helping shape it.
