We aim for fair and transparent AI-driven learning
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in education and corporate training, and poses not only opportunities but risks. On the one hand, the platform recommends adapting content based on learners’ performance, then learning, and even thanks to AI, it can evaluate responses within seconds. On the other hand, AI-driven learning is not always fair. why? AI learns from bias, incomplete, or representative data. Additionally, failing to find and correct biases can lead to unfair treatment, unequal opportunities, and lack of transparency among learners.
It is unfortunate that the same systems that personalize learning and benefit learners across the board can be unintentionally ruled out. So, how do you use AI while ensuring that all learners are fair, transparent and respected? Finding this balance is called “ethical AI use.” Below we dive into the ethical aspects of AI-driven learning, identify biases, explore ways to keep algorithms transparent and reliable, and present the challenges and solutions for using AI responsibly in education and training.

Bias is one of the biggest concerns when talking about AI, particularly fairness in AI-driven learning systems. But what exactly is that? Even if you build the most comprehensive AI system, it’s not entirely clear whether it will work perfectly forever. Auditing helps you find biases early in your algorithm, allowing you to fix them before they become more serious problems. Impact assessment takes this a step further and confirms both the short- and long-term impacts that may have on learners with different biases, particularly those in minority groups.
Human review
AI doesn’t know everything and can’t replace humans. It’s smart, but it doesn’t empathize and does not understand general, cultural, or emotional contexts. Therefore, teachers, instructors and training professionals must be involved in providing reviews of the content they generate and human insights, such as understanding emotions.
Ethical AI Framework
Several organizations have published frameworks and guidelines that help you use AI ethically. First, UNESCO [1] It promotes human-centered AI that respects diversity, inclusion, and human rights. Their framework encourages transparency, open access and strong data governance, especially in education. Next, the OECD principles in AI [2] State that it should be fair, transparent, accountable and beneficial to humanity. Finally, the EU is working on AI regulations [3] We plan to monitor the educational AI system closely. This includes requirements for transparency, data use, and human review.

When AI recommends content, grades assignments, or sends notifications, it must inform learners of why. This involves recommending resources on topics they scored, or suggesting courses based on similar advancements from their peers. A clear message builds trust and gives learners more control over their knowledge and skills.
Involving stakeholders
Stakeholders, such as educators, administrators, and learning designers, need to understand how AI operates. If everyone involved knows what the system does, the data it uses, and what its limitations are, it will be easier to spot problems, improve performance, and ensure fairness. For example, if an administrator has confirmed that a particular learner is consistently providing additional support, they can investigate whether the algorithm is correct or if adjustments are required.

When it comes to using AI-driven learning, getting a powerful platform is not enough. You need to make sure it is being used ethically and responsibly. So it’s great to have an ethical AI checklist when choosing software. All AI-powered learning systems must be built and evaluated based on four key principles: fairness, accountability, transparency and user control. Fairness means ensuring that the system does not support one group of learners over another group. Accountability is about those responsible for the mistakes that AI could make. Transparency ensures learners are ensuring how decisions are being made. User controls also allow learners to challenge results and opt out of certain features.
Monitoring
Adopting an AI-driven learning system requires continuous assessment to ensure it is still working well. AI tools should evolve based on real-time feedback, performance analysis, and regular audits. This is because the algorithms can rely on specific data and unintentionally start a group of learners at a disadvantage. Meanwhile, educators and learning designers need to know when AI tools can be trusted and when to ask questions.
