The American Water Charitable Foundation awarded a STEM education grant to the Community Soil Foundation. This will benefit students in underserved communities in Sonoma County, California, served by California American Water.

The Community Soil Foundation is funded by the Extended Child Care Coalition and provides science-based, land-focused education programs in Sonoma County. The foundation’s central project is the Larkfield Community Garden, where students at Mark West Elementary School engage in science lessons aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards.
Lessons cover topics such as decomposition, pollination, and germination, allowing students to explore science through hands-on learning while providing communities with access to fresh produce.
With the new funding, the foundation plans to expand its reach to serve approximately 400 students each week.
