BEIJING – Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi is targeting rival Tesla directly with a new electric SUV.
Xiaomi’s gorgeous Yu7 SUV starts at 253,500 yuan ($35,322), CEO Lei Jun pointed out Thursday that it is 10,000 yuan cheaper than the Tesla Model Y, which starts at 263,500 yuan in China.
Before the official price announcement, City’s report stated a forecast for the Yu7 SUV to be priced at around 250,000 yuan to 320,000 yuan ($34,800 to $44,590) and projected sales of around 30,000 units per month. Once Pace recovers, Citi predicts annual sales of 300,000-360,000 units.
The Xiaomi company’s SU7 sedan, released last year, was also available for purchase at a Tesla Model 3 or lower.
Lei claimed on Thursday that the Yu7 defeated Tesla’s Model Y with various metrics, but still lacked driver assistance. The Yu7 comes with driver assist software, and its cutting edge version comes with Nvidia’s Thor chip. The pre-sale begins Thursday at 10pm and is expected to be delivered within one to five weeks.
Just three minutes after the launch of Yu7 Pre-Sales, Xioami said it had received over 200,000 orders.

Xiaomi initially said it would release the Yu7 in July. Previous events will be held amid the strengthening of the electric vehicle price war.
Xiaomi revealed the Yu7 SUV in late May, less than a year after launching its first electric vehicle, claiming it had a driving range of at least 760 kilometers (472 miles) on a single charge.
This is well above the 719km advertised for Tesla’s long-range model Y. For consumers who are worried about frequent battery charging, driving range has been a selling point.
Although Xiaomi doesn’t promote artificial intelligence as much as other consumer brands, it showed off several AI Car features at its launch event on Thursday, including allowing drivers to use hand movements to change songs, or asking the phone app to explain where the car is parked.
Yu7 also supports Apple Car Play and Apple Music, Lei said.
Smart Glasses
China’s Smartphone and Home Appliance Company launched several other products on Thursday, including glasses related to the highly planned artificial intelligence.
AI glasses, a Ray Bans Smart offering from rival Meta, can change lens tints, scan QR codes to make payments, and mimic the Chinese mobile phone smartphone app. Xiaomi also announced features similar to Metagrass features, such as being able to take photos and videos, and used interactive AI to identify flowers and translate text.
Xiaomi’s AI glasses start at 1,999 yuan ($279). A Xiaomi spokesperson said there are currently no plans to sell glasses overseas. The Meta version is not officially sold in China.
