BEIJING – China on Thursday said there was no continued discussion with the US over tariffs despite indications that tensions from the White House will ease this week.
“There are currently no economic and trade negotiations between China and the US,” his Commerce Department spokesman told reporters for Mandarin, translated by CNBC. He added that “all proverbs” regarding progress in bilateral consultations should be rejected.
“If the US really wants to solve the problem… it’s necessary to cancel all unilateral measures in China,” he said.
This week, US President Donald Trump and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent showed that tensions with China could be eased. The White House added a 145% tariff on Chinese products earlier this month.
Commerce’s comments reflect the comments of Guo Zi-Kung, a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who said there would be no continued consultations on Thursday afternoon, state media said.
Both spokespersons have led China to an official policy that they are willing to talk to the US, provided Beijing is treated equally.

On Thursday, the Commerce Department stressed the government and business efforts to help businesses sell goods for export to the Chinese market instead.
The United States is China’s biggest trading partner. However, in the past few years, Southeast Asia has surpassed the European Union and has become China’s largest trading partner on a regional basis.
