Breer: Patriots ‘back in business’ as NFL trade deadline approaches Originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
The New England Patriots are truly a rebuilding team with a 2-6 record, so it would make sense for them to sell ahead of the November 5th NFL trade deadline, assuming they can get the right deal. That would be a good idea.
If a contending team is willing to offer draft picks in exchange for a veteran player, the Patriots should seriously consider those options.
What’s the latest on the Patriots with less than two weeks until the trade deadline?
“They’re open and they’ll listen to anything,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer said Sunday on NBC Sports Boston’s Patriots pregame live, as seen in the video player above.
“I think what you want to look at are guys who are on their second contract and who might be deep in their careers, but in two or three years when the program starts, those guys are going to be a puzzle. It’s a little hard to see it becoming a major piece of “They would have hoped that would be the case.” ”
What positions will the team be looking to strengthen for the second half of the regular season and the playoffs?
“As far as behind-the-scenes discussions between teams, I think the two markets that have been really hot are wide receiver and edge rusher,” Bouyer said.
“These are two areas where the Patriots have surplus — I’m not saying they have great players at those positions, but they have the numbers at those positions, so It’s going to take the load off the players and not make them dysfunctional in those positions.”
“So Josh Uche already has Keion White and Dietrich Wise Jr., and you could see him being a name that could garner some interest. Again, the edge rusher market is heating up. I think so.”
“We’ve already seen a lot of wide receiver moves, like DeAndre Hopkins and Amari Cooper. We’ll see some wide receiver moves over the next nine days. Kendrick Bourne, KJ Osborn. I would like you to pay attention to these two points. ”

The Patriots have a slew of young wide receivers, including rookies Jaylin Polk and Javon Baker, as well as Tiquan Thornton, Kayshon Boot and Demario Douglas, who need snaps to develop. So if another team makes a good offer for a veteran like Bourne or Osborn, it would be a smart move for the Patriots.
Uche did not play Sunday when the Patriots defeated the New York Jets 25-22 in a Week 8 game at Gillette Stadium. FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported before the game that Uche was not injured and that he is “the focus of trade talks around the NFL, and his contract is very attractive to competing teams.” Uche is a good player, but the Patriots have some depth at edge rusher.
Trading a veteran to make a bad team worse isn’t the most ideal situation, but the Patriots need to keep the future in mind. It would be a positive outcome for the team if they can strengthen their collection of draft picks before the trade deadline.
