MALDENE, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The closure of Kanawha County schools for the third time in less than a week came as no surprise to some.
“This is kind of a work in progress at this point,” Tresa Howell said.
said Malden resident Kimberly Milhoan. I don’t think it matters what we say. ”
The school board voted unanimously Monday night to close Malden Elementary School after a public hearing was held to voice community concerns.
“I was going to talk about it tonight, but I was like, like everyone’s saying, it doesn’t matter what you say. You can sit there and cry about it and get emotional about it. , which probably would have happened if I had done that,” Milhoan said.
Miljoan returned to his hometown after living in South America because his house was close to the elementary school he previously attended.
“When I came to sell the house, I felt like I had returned to the United States from Colombia, South America, because of the neighborhood and the school. The reason I was interested in the house was because it was a historic home. And the history of the town was important,”’ she said.
Milhoan, who runs a property management company, said the school’s location allows her to spend time with her adopted sister.
“A big part of our day is walking to school, so we wake up in the morning, get ready, walk to school and say a little mantra.”
Kanawha County Schools Superintendent Tom Williams said the school will not close unless funding from the school construction authority is approved to consolidate all four elementary schools. Milhoan said he hopes to keep the school going in some way.
“I’ll buy Malden if I have to. Just like I hope history doesn’t just disappear.”
Tresa Howell said both the aging of the existing school and the limited space in the new school were concerns.
“Part of the upkeep. It looks like it’s been sitting on the side of the road uncared for for years,” Howell said.
Superintendent Williams said if School Construction Authority funding is approved by mid-December and the board votes to close all four elementary schools, a new school will be built where DuPont Middle School once stood. said.
