The typical image of a successful negotiator is someone who is competent, confident, and in control. This characteristic does not necessarily apply to people with disabilities. The two researchers wanted to understand whether people with disabilities are more stigmatized in intense jobs, such as potentially controversial price-based negotiations. If so, is this bias more pronounced for women and people with invisible disabilities? We asked 2,000 people to conduct an online experiment in which they recorded a negotiation involving an employee named “Alex.” They were read aloud and evaluated for honesty and competency. In addition to representing Alex as male or…
MURIEL WILKINS: I’m Muriel Wilkins, and this is Coaching Real Leaders, part of the HBR Podcast Network. I’m a longtime executive coach who works with highly successful leaders who’ve hit a bump in the road. My job is to help them get over that bump by clarifying their goals and figuring out a way to reach them, so that hopefully they can lead with a little more ease. I typically work with clients over the course of several months, but on this show we have a one-time coaching meeting focusing on a specific leadership challenge they’re facing. Today’s guest is…
About Lambert Straser Dear reader, I have similarly characterized my views as pragmatic and cynical. Let’s briefly explain them. I believe in universal programs that bring tangible material benefits, especially to the working class. Medicare for All is a prime example, but tuition-free colleges and post office banks also fall under this category. The same goes for job guarantees and debt jubilees. Clearly, neither liberal Democrats nor conservative Republicans can carry out such a plan. This is because both are neoliberalisms of different nature (“for the market”). I don’t really care about profiteering “isms”, but either way we need to…

According to VOA, the US is doing “soul searching” about its mission in the Sahel region of Africa — and largely finding the same answers. Maj. General Ekman, who oversaw the recent US withdrawal from Niger which was completed in September, said Niger’s expulsion of US forces will not change the American mission. “How we will pursue [those objectives], either together or apart, as a consequence of the withdrawal remains to be seen, but we wanted to make sure we kept all options on the table,” he said. Before the government overthrows in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, the US…

Private schools across the South that were established for white children during desegregation are now benefiting from tens of millions in taxpayer dollars flowing from rapidly expanding voucher-style programs, a ProPublica analysis found. In North Carolina alone, we identified 39 of these likely “segregation academies” that are still operating and that have received voucher money. Of these, 20 schools reported student bodies that were at least 85% white in…
